Walking the Line: Seed Tapes = Pierced Tapes (1983)
Drawing inspiration from her artist’s book of the same title, Gordon’s first major gallery exhibition Walking the Line, featured a series of paintings, drawings and books created with simple materials. “The line is seed tape, biodegradable plastic (polyvinyl acetate) embedded with seeds used for plantings, and a metaphor for the balance of nature and technology. On one side of the line is possible immortality, life outside the womb, cloning, incredible advances in the quality of life. On the other side of the line is extinction, either from nuclear holocaust or environmental disregard; an aerialist walking a tight rope.” Debuted at the Douglas Drake Galley in Kansas City, Missouri, the exhibition was very successful and virtually sold out.
