After graduating from Finch College in 1966 in New York City, Shea Gordon become a studio assistant for renown Greek artist, Takis Vassikakis at his Chelsea Hotel Studio. Through working with Takis, Gordon became interested in the intersection of Art and Science, and mesmerized by the kinetic sculptures he created using magnets, electricity, and other invisible forces of nature. During this inspirational time, Gordon continued exploring her earlier series of stream of consciousness paintings and drawings titled, "Nature Lines," which first incorporated her overall interest in nature and ecological concerns. In 1968, she moved to Coconut Grove, Florida. There, she became interested in the mathematically mystical nature of Numbers and their interpretations according to Pythagorean Numerical System. This series incorporates her interest in reduction and Minimalism. In 1985, Shea Gordon became aware of the drastic evaporation of the Dead Sea and the alteration of its shape, which Gordon refers to as an "embryo." Her emotional response to this pending tragedy sparked her interest in the Dead Sea and marks the beginning of her mature period of Dead Sea art. Below is a portfolio of Shea Gordon's early work, prior to 1985.
